These buttery, maple-sweetened bars taste like pecan pie’s more approachable cousin —
chewy, caramelized, and impossible to stop at one square. The base has a delicate, almost shortbread-like crumble that makes the whole dessert feel rich yet perfectly balanced.
Red Fife doesn’t whisper in the background — it adds personality. Its naturally nutty flavour leans right into the caramelized maple and pecan filling, turning a sweet treat into something that tastes nostalgic and handcrafted, like a recipe passed down before store-bought crusts existed.
Note:
Try toasting the flour in a dry skillet for 3–4 minutes before making the crust. It deepens the flavour and releases a natural buttery aroma that enhances the caramel notes of the filling.
Ingredients:
Crust:
1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
1⁄2 cup (100 g) sugar
2 cups (240 g) Better Basics Organic All-purpose Red Fife Flour
1⁄2 tsp salt
Filling:
3⁄4 cup (160 g) brown sugar
1⁄2 cup (120 ml) maple syrup
1⁄4 cup (60 ml) honey
4 tbsp (56 g) butter, melted
3 large eggs, beaten
1 tsp vanilla bean paste
2 cups (200 g) pecans, roughly chopped
1⁄4 tsp fresh ground nutmeg
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9x13-inch pan with parchment.
Beat butter and sugar, then mix in flour and salt until crumbly. Press into the pan. Bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden.
2. Meanwhile, whisk sugar, maple syrup, honey, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla paste. Fold in pecans and ground nutmeg.
3. Pour filling over the hot crust. Bake 30–35 minutes until set.
4. Cool completely before slicing into bars.
